'XbaseY' is a part of an Ethernet terminology. Ethernet is a process by which computers can be connected to a Local Area Network (LAN) using coaxial cable. It carries radio frequency signals among computers at the speed of 10 megabits per second. The cables are marked as 'XbaseY'. For example, 10base10, where X means the data rate in Mbps, base means 'baseband'. Baseband means a transmission medium of signals and Y means the category of cabling. The most common is 100baseT which means fast Ethernet. Other common ones are 100base FX which means a fast Ethernet over optical fibre. The original cable was 10base5.
