Leopold basically is a Germanic name, made up of two steams, similar to Germanic names. The primary section of the name is linked to the Latin term "Leo" which means "lion", where as the second section is of the name is of Germanic origin and means "brave".

So the name initially meant "as brave as a lion". The name has been applied since the 5th century. Quiet a few well known people have shared this name for example, Leopold I, who were the primary king of Belgium.
