The spelling of the name has undergone many changes in 900 years. The Scottish side started when a merchant Patrick married the daughter of the Lord of Carriber in Linlithgow. His grandson Robert became the personal friend of the other Noble that lived there James Stewart the Fifth King of Scotland. He allowed Robert to change places with him.
