Seneca is the name of a tribe. It is also known as Seneca Nation. These people are the original inhabitants of North America. It is one of the Six Nations comprising of a group of First Nations or Native Americans. They live in United States and Canada and are also found in western New York State in Oklahoma and near Brantford in Ontario. Today the Senecas have a population of 15,000 to 20,000 in these areas.

They form the Western most state of the Iroquois Confederation in 1142 and hence they are known as the "Keepers of the Western Door". Seneca tribe is also credited as being the most populous of all the Iroquois nations. They have been involved in several occupations like farming, hunting, fishing, and getting fur from animals. Today they have become more civilized, most of them have adopted Christianity and also the customs of their American neighbours and live in log cabins.

Not only is this an American Indian tribe name, it's origin is from Ancient Rome- meaning "old". There was a Roman orator named Seneca- around Christ's time and he had a son with the same name who was a philosopher.
