The word Sierra Leone has its origin in the Portuguese term 'Serra Leoa' which conveys the idea of the 'lioness mountain'.

But the word is in popular use because it conveys the idea of the name of a country that is located in the western part of the continent of Africa, so the term Sierra Leone's flag certainly used for the flag that belongs to that country. The flag is a striped one and the stripes are set horizontally and are of three colours. The uppermost stripe is of green colour and followed by the white one. The lowermost stripe is of blue colour and all of them are set in equal proportion.

The capital of the country is Freetown and the official, language that is prevailing in the country is English.

The green stripe represents agriculture, the country's natural wealth and its mountains. The white stripe stands for justice and unity, and blue represents the Atlantic Ocean and the harbour of Freetown, the country's capital.
