Word root is derived from the Old English word rōt. Later, it was adapted by the Middle English as rot. Rot is a noun and generally denotes that part of the plant that is underground. It supports that plant to stand erect and absorbs the nutrients from the soil. Other underground plants structures like the rhizomes or corn and tubers are also termed root. A part of body that is embedded in the tissue and supports the part above the tissue is called root.

Root is a base or core or essential part or basis or something. In language, root is a word from which other words are derived and carries the meaning of the word. The verb root has several connotations as follows: to plant, to furnish a source or origin to, to cause and to become settled or established. When someone roots out something, he removes it from the roots or its foundation.
