The word pathological is used as an adjective and the meaning you can figure out of its use is that something that is not very reasonable or sensible but almost impossible to control. You can use the word mostly with abstract phenomena like fear or violence. You can also use it with the word liar and a pathological liar is a person who can not stop telling lies, though he is not making any deliberate attempt to tell a lie.

The word can also be used for something that is connected with illness or disease and this use of the word is more popular than the above-mentioned one. A pathological depression is a kind of depression that is caused due to illness and has no relation to anything other than that.
