The word peso can seek its derivation in Spanish language where the meaning it conveys is that of weight. The word was earlier being used for a Spanish coin but now it is the main currency of many Latin American countries where Spanish is the main language. You can find this currency is Uruguay, Mexico, Chili, Cuba and also the Philippines in Asia. Earlier the currency was in use in Argentina also but they replace it later.

If you come to the introduction of the currency in Chili, it was introduced way back in the year 1817 and in the early years it was circulated along with another silver coins. The peso that is in circulation now was first issued in the year 1975 and with little change it is still in existence.
