what does 'velis et remis' mean?

The literal translation of the Latin phrase velis et remis is "Sails and Oars" if I remember correctly.

The meaning behind it is quite simple: It represents an "all out effort".

If you're looking for an English equivalent, then the closest I can think of is: 'full steam ahead'.

Of course this relates to trains, not boats though.
