A lever refers to a simple device or machine. This device is made up of a rigid bar, which is turned at a certain point and is used to give out force, such as in lifting or moving weights from one side by putting force down on the other side. It is basically the handle that is used to project as well as operate complex mechanisms. It is simply a machine that is useful for the amplification of force that is physical in nature. The working of a lever is purely based on the laws of physics, such as Newton's laws of motion.

A lever is also metaphorically used to denote a way of achieving something. To move something or raise something in a similar way as a lever is also called as the act of levering.
