Immortal means not being subject to the phenomenon of death. It refers to something as being everlasting and never ending. It can mean something that will never be forgotten. Immortal is also a term found in Biology where it refers to the capacity of indefinite division and growth. In this sense of the word it is used specifically when speaking of cells in culture.

The word Immortal comes from the Middle English and is derived from the Old French word "immortel" with roots in the Latin "immortalis".

Immortal is a concept used when referring to God or Gods as they are believed to be immune to death. Immortal can be defined in terms of imperishable and its antonyms include mortal, unknown, human, perishable, destructible etc.

Achilles sought immortality based on the strength of his sword arm as he believed that his name would live on forever. Most takes on fictional vampires refer to them as immortal, but even though they are not subject to natural death a vampire can also be killed.
