This sentence literally means 'shut your mouth' in Spanish. It's a colloquial phrase and is obviously not used with a view to greet or be friendly to somebody. If you're looking for words and phrases to use when you're holidaying in Spain then this isn't really one to remember! There are some things you can do to learn some holiday lingo though:
- Freetranslation.com
This website is able to offer you free translation services. All you need to do is go to the website and find the free translation area. If you want to convert foreign text, you need to enter it into the first box and the website will automatically attempt to find out what language it is. It will then give you the option to choose the language that it will be converted into. If you want to learn some holiday phrases and words, however, you can type your translation into the first box and you will be given the same word or phrase in Spanish or any other language in the other box.
There are paid translation services available from the website but these services are generally only for those who need a long document or speech converting.
- Books
Most bookshops have a travel section within them. As well as providing books that give you an insight into the area that you are traveling to, you should come across plenty of books that offer you some friendly Spanish phrases. Tourist books will include information about where to go on your stay and should have a section that will allow you to have rather basic conversations about necessities with Spanish locals.
- Apps
There are many apps for mobile phones that translate words, too, so check them out.
