The acronym CERN originally was known as Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (European Council for Nuclear Research), in French. This council was set up by 11 European governments, in the year 1952. Later in the year 1954 it changed to Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire (European Organization for Nuclear Research).
It is the known as the largest particle physics laboratory across the globe and is located just to the west of Geneva on the border between France and Switzerland. The most renowned World Wide Web was born in this very laboratory. It performs the main duty of providing the particle accelerators and other requirements that are needed by high energy physics research.
Its current organisation structure consist of 3000 people full-time and approximately 6500 scientists and engineers, which rounds up to half of the world particles physics group work on this very project.
