Throughout history there have been a number of peace symbols used in various cultures and contexts. One of the oldest and most well-known is the olive branch. This, alongside the white dove, was used by early Christians and became most prominent in the 18th century. Pablo Picasso popularised the symbol in 1949 and it became widely used in the post-war peace movement. In the 20th century, the V hand signal and peace flag was developed by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the post-war peace movement and is now seen as an international peace symbol. These symbols are used as a representation of peace across the world. They are designed to symbolise peace in any language and can be mutually understood by individuals and countries worldwide.
The most common peace signs seen today are the V hand signal and the Peace Flag. The hand gesture requires the palm to face outwards, with the index and middle fingers open and all other fingers closed. It was first used to represent victory in the Second World War before taking on the meaning of peace by protestors in the United States against the Vietnam War in the 1960s. The international peace flag, with the colours of the rainbow, was first used in Italy on a peace march from Perugia to Assisi in 1961. This march was organised by the pacifist and social philosopher Aldo Capitini. Capitini was inspired by the flags used on British protest marches and quickly asked women in Perugia to sew together coloured strips of material. Typically the flag has seven rainbow coloured stripes and the word ‘Peace’ written over the centre. The rainbow on the flag is said to be a symbol of peace across the earth and the sky, and, by extension, among all men. The use of the flag became widespread by protestors against the impending war in Iraq.
Everyone that says that it's only for peace and love, you really should look up some more information. Those of you saying that people are stupid for thinking it has bad meanings... Yeah.... I honestly believe the original designer of the symbol did not mean anything anti-Christian with it, considering he first wanted to use a Christian cross, but was advised against it. The "peace sign," stands for Nuclear Disarmament. However, I think this is probably the biggest design blunder of all time, since the designer didn't look up the history of the symbol he was using. It is also the "Nero," cross, an upside down, broken crucifix. It is a symbol that has been used in Satanic rituals throughout history. I stopped wearing the peace sign as soon as I heard about the Nero cross, because I am a Christian. Now that I have done more research and found out that the designer did not have anti-Christian intentions, I am still not going to wear it because I am convinced he was just an idiot for not considering it's other meanings. And of course because I don't want to wear anything that has links to Satanic rituals :-P
It means that its against christ. The peace sign is an upside down cross and the anti-christ will be wearing it which ppl wont notice because they will see a peace sign but its bad. Also it is a broken upside down cross so yea.. Don't want that!
You all believe what you will. Satan is alive and well on this planet.Personally if there is a doubt that the peace sigh is satanic (I have studied 25 years and believe this to be true)I will not display it. I pray you all will find the truth.
A long time ago in the times of ceasar the symbol was a sign which meant "peace without christians" and romans would torture and kill christians by nailing them to upside down crosses which were put on fire...if you look closly at the symbol its an upside down cross...sorry for the bad grammar I'm not an american.
It means a broken upside down cross! Look at it upside down and it looks really like a bent upside down but believe me it is. I AM A CHRISTIAN BELIEVE ME. TELL ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS!
I don't know what you could mean by that, but the peace sign only means 'Peace'. There aren't any bad or evil things associated with it. It was a common site in the 60s for the hippie generation. All they wanted was peace as our country was at war at that time with Vietnam. Hope this helps.
I don't know what it means but as a jehovah witness I wanted to know because we don't believe that he died on the cross we believe that he died on the steak for us. And I myself love peace signs and if you look at it, it looks like a cross so I just really wanted to know[?]
The peace sign means: Peace sign. Another sign that mocks the cross of Jesus. Also know as "The Dead Man Rune". It appears on the tombstones of some of Hitler's SS troops.
I don't know for sure what it means, but years ago when I looked it up it meant that it was a Communist sign. With all the different meanings, I wouldn't wear one.
For all viewers, it has been said that the peace sign meant different things. O.K if it originally meant this (IT used to be anti Christ but now NO ONE thinks of it that way). Now its just love peace kindness etc. It means peace. Example: If a boy is born Jew, and he leave his country and go live in another country just because he went to live somewhere else doesn't change him into another race. The name is change to appeared to be peaceful, but it's deceitful, cause many to be ignorant, and worship thing they have no knowledge of. It's so hard to get people to see the truth after they have believed a lie all there life or because popularity, hey after all if everybody is doing it can't wrong. Satan knows what appear to the human nature, make it beautiful to distract attention from what I'm really doing. Don't be fooled cause it's popular and looks good, you no the saying everything that look good to you ain't good for you! Lot's of people are deceived about a lot of things. They will be the ones on the other side asking for drink of cold water.
I believe it to be an occult sign, resurrected into our generation from the time of Nero's crucifixions, under the disguise of representing peace in order to mislead our generation into believing in peace with no God. Now we can see it all around us, the signs are everywhere, but do not forget that symbols are timeless unlike words. The inverted pentagram has represented satan forever but if it was introduced to the five generations later as a sign of victory and told that the meaning had been changed, do you think the will believe? Anyway who has the right to change the meaning of a symbol that long represented hatred of Christ's followers to mean peace, ask yourself? Symbols and signs are more powerful than you know, or even imagine, take time to research and you will find some very interesting truths. Symbols and signs are a language unspoken, like what the dumb or deaf use but with deep rooted history. Occult signs are all around us today without our knowledge. Even the maps of some cities like Washington D.C were designed to contain occult symbols in the plan of the streets, just google "Washington D.C occult map" and see for yourself. All I'm saying is that symbols are more powerful than you know, and the peace sign is not a sign of true peace.
If you mean the ankh - the teardrop shaped amulet with a three-legged cross-type design in the middle - that was from Egypt. It was the image used to represent one of their gods - it was adopted by we "flower children" in the sixties. If you mean the two fingered salute flashed in millions of pictures I really don't know. It is similar to the P symbol in American Sign Language but when my friends and I flashed it, we meant be at peace with yourself - with others - and with the world in general. We wanted folks to stop killing each other because we had different beliefs and desires. But, we aren't that idealistic anymore.
It totally means love, kindness, happiness, sisterhood, friendship. Not a broken cross the person who said that is a dumbo! It looks nothing like a broken cross. Try drawing it! A circle and a bunch of lines. It means nothing anti cross or a regular cross. But a sign which means PEACE!!!!!!
I don't think it means anything bad. Thought history it has had different meanings like a dove or an olive branch. Just don't worry its not bad. Some people just assumes it is though but its not.
Depending on how far back you go it can mean different things. If you go back to Roman times it was used to mock Christians, in the sixties it was used to protest, and now its just a popular symbol for global peace.
It is today a symbol of love used by hippies in the 60s though it used to be a sign the Romans used when persecuting Christians it has also been found on the graves of hurlers ss troops
I agree. That the peace sign has majorly stood for hippies and the nuclear disarmament however the centuries before that when German Jews fled their country they used symbols to communicate in tunnels and passages of a circle and an upright cross. When found the symbols etched beside it were were turned upside down. Then when Nero rained in Rome Christianity was outlawed and the same thing when they hid. So from upright cross to symbol Christian safe houses to Jews hiding from nazis to hippies picking a symbol that had a horrible history without doing proper research. One man mislead a generation that wanted to demonstrate knowledge being powerful but I guess we learn that not knowing is powerful too. I choose to believe.
The peace sign really does mean something bad. I mean if your a christan. It is a symbol of the cross that Jesus died on up sidedown & broken! Which means that if God didnt exist there would be peace in the world which isn't true because he created he world. There a fun accessory but they aren't a good symbol.
Normally know in days it supposedly means peace and other pll are wearing it thinking it means that whn actually means the cross with the things pointing down witch means that god was defeated and that the devil won when it actually god resurrected rose and the enemy was defeated!!!!!
Haii, I'm a hippy, Love the Peace sign, Like many other people have said the Pace sign was used mostly in the 60s when the Hippy range came out, But it started after the Vietnam war when there was no Peace, the, until the "peace protest" Came along
I have never heard of it ever meaning anything other than peace. For some reason it has became quite the "thing" to do in pics for profiles these days, not sure why! Maybe the war I guess. But as far as I know, It only means peace Dude!!♥
Peace is just a sign that represents happiness and freedom. Some people say its " The end of the world " but its really not! A lot of people that I know love peace but are not sure what it means. And all I know is peace isn't bad :))))
I heard that it was a broken cross at first but now I'm hearing that its just showing love and kindness and I agree with that but people are making a big deal about it it its just a peace sign !!! Big deal !!!
The peace sign is from Nero who was a Roman Empire. He was against Christians and put their bodies on wood steaks and light them on fire. He invented the peace sign as it is ment to represent a broken cross.
The Peace sign made by hand is actually the sign of Victory. Used after world war II. The Peace sign as a symbol people wear on shirts and jewelry was used in the 60's to protest the Vietnam War. It was a sign the hippies used to protest our soldiers coming home from a terrible and horrific time in their lives only to be spit on and called terrible names. I find the peace sign offensive and the youth that wear the signs today have no idea the memories the sign brings back and probably don't care, just as the protesters did not care that the vet's of the 60's did not want to go but were drafted to give their lives and for those lucky to return home, gave a big part of their emotions and mind to that war and to the American government and people. I better stop, this can only get negative from here.
Peace sign is a sign what represents love, peace, unity and end of war it also represents a Roman symbol (from the time of Nero). It represents a cross (one of the symbols of The Christian's at the time) upside down with the cross arm's broken so they pointed down. The Romans thought that the only way to have peace was to break the Christians of their faith.
I think the Peace Symbol means everything life could ask for. If it meant anything bad, I would know. If your a Jehovah's witness you can believe what you want, but you can't change the beliefs or thoughts!!! The Peace Symbol Means LOVE, HOPE, and PEACE! Now, PEACE OUT HOME DOGS OF CHRIST AND HIPPIES!!!!
Religion shouldn't have so much meaning to a persons thoughts, its only a trait passed on from one generation to the next... And I believe it was proposed there as a sense for faith, but were all human we don't need religion to discover were alike or whom to like in general, if anything the peace sign means peace and I'd prefer that over any quarrels of religion they bring out there
I am in love with peace signs I have the t-shirt earring's necklace and shoes so I heard from some people that it was a borken Christen Cross and I heard that I war Begin so the peace came and I heard that it is peace with out no god but I don't believe that
Peace sighs was a symbol that a guy made it first was a stick body, but a guy took of the head and put a circle around the body. The symbol was not meant to be I sign of peace. What it meant was... Well lets just say the opposite of peace it meant hatred and fighting. It became the sigh of peace when the war was over about decades ago. The guy who made it died before that so he couldn't tell everyone that it is not a sign of peace it something much worse then that. :(
A peace sign is a broken inverted cross, and doesnt mean peace whatsoever. It is another sign that mocks the cross of Jesus. Also know as "The Dead Man Rune". It appears on the tombstones of some of Hitler's SS troops. Some call it Nero's cross, linking it to the notorious Roman emperor who persecuted Christians. GET EDUCATED!!!
The peace sign stands for "nuclear disarmament". It was epitomized in the 60's, during the Vietnam war as a recognizable symbol of the anti-war movement. It is not an upside-down, broken cross, that was made up by the church as a form of propaganda. (just so you know, the cross has no religious meaning either, because, believe it or not, being crucified was a common practice among traitors during that period)
Some people say that the circle was a bed and the line was a prostitute and the upsidedown v was a man who was bad or something like that but I say that even if a lot of people like it it doesn't mean you have to wear it or support it its what you think inside and sometimes its good to be unique
Peace signs are bad my friend told me that a very long time ago there where these bad witches and the hated the world so the took the cross and broke the sides and put a circle around it and told everybody that it meant peace but it really means evil so never where peace signs and please just trust me I know when people lie or tell the truth and she was not lying and she was six teen and she was gothic but I still know when people lie or thell the truth so take this mesage
The peace sign is an inverted crucifix a crucifix is a cross and if it is upside down its an inverted crucifix a inverted crucifix worships the devil.....
