The African Diaspora is caused by the movement of people of African origin to various parts of the world. These people mainly settled in large numbers in the countries of North America, Latin America, the Caribbean islands and South America. Brazil has the largest population of people of African origin in the world. The African Diaspora, as we know it now, is made up of mostly those people whose ancestors were kidnapped by the European settlers between the 15th and the 19th centuries and brought to the countries where the latter had their plantations.
These people of African origin worked as slaves and farm-hands on these plantations. Despite being enslaved, ill-treated and made to suffer many hardships at the hands of their European colonial masters, the people of African origin were a hardy, happy-go-lucky race that contributed the lively genres of the blues, jazz, rap and hip-hop to the world of music. Americans of African origin such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and Jesse Jackson are known for their immense contributions to American society. In contemporary times, many African-Americans, such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, etc. are considered international icons.
