Here is an interesting excerpt translating the name Jade in Chinese:
" Jade in Chinese is pronounced as ‘Yu’.... The concept of Yu is usually misunderstood .... Yu could be more accurately translated as a precious or ornamental rock. Yu is seldom used to define true jade. Many girls in ancient China were named jade by their parents to express their love for their children. A story is told of one of the four beauties who was a favorite concubine to Emperor Xuanzong durring the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Her name was Yang Yuhuan, Yuhuan translates simply to ‘jade ring’ in Chinese."
The name (a noun for a hard ornamental stone) comes from Spanish "ijada", meaning "flank" (or animal, due to its casual similarity). As for the stone itself, there are two main groups of types of jades (whose colours vary from white to dark green, many being really so beautiful), one having first been found in Guatemala, Central America, and other in Burma, Southern Asia, there existing some in ancient China as well as in New Zealand.
