Phoebe pronounced as Fee-bee is a name of Greek origin; it is one of the names for the Greek Moon goddess the others being Artemis, Cynthia and Diana who was the mother of Leto in Greek mythology. The name itself has derived from the Greek word phoibos which means light and brightness. The name of the Sun God Apollo being Phoebus, Phoebe may be considered its feminine version. The name has a Biblical reference too with mention of a woman called Phoebe who had helped St Paul. Today the name is well known due to the character of Phoebe Buffay in the television series Friends.

The name Phoebe is a common feminine first name. It is used mostly in English and Greek mythology (Pheobe is a Latinised feminine first name) and is also a Biblical first name. The correct pronunciation of the name Phoebe is Fee-bee. The name Pheobe is made up of two syllables, Fee and bee. More emphasis is put on the first of the two syllables that make up the name Phoebe, namely the syllable Fee.

Pheobe is the Latinised form of the Greek first name Phoibe, which means pure and bright. The name Phoibe has been derived from the Greek word phoibos. In Greek mythology Phoibe was the name of a Titan. She was associated with the moon. This was also the nickname of her grand-daughter Artemis, the goddess of the moon. A moon of the planet Saturn also bears the name Phoebe in honour of the Titan of the same name.
