Vernacular Press Act, was a act passed by Lord Lytton, the Viceroy of India in 1878 which was against the publishing of Indian press which were trying to  
light up the flame of revolt and patriotism against the English government by highlighting their injustice, insult and arrogance towards the Indians.

An act done by the Britist Government to pressurize the Indian press.It was for papers (mainly Amrita bazar patrika) which used to spot on the wrong activities of East India Company.

VERNACULAR PRESS ACT

1) The Vernacular Act was passed in 1878 modelled on the Irish press laws.
2) It provided the government with extensive rights to censor reports and editorials in the vernacular press.
3) The govt. Kept regular track of newspapers and if a reports was judeged seditious, the newspaper was warned.
4) If the warning was ignored, the press was liable to be seized and the printing machinery confiscated.
