Science Fiction writers have a vision that cannot be beaten by anyone. They can visualize things that would take place years later. Such was the case with Arthur C Clark, who in his science fiction novel imagined a satellite that would remain stationary at one point and would be very useful in the global communication, weather forecasting and television broadcasting.

A Geo-stationary satellite as the name goes appears to be stationary at one point over the earth for the entire period that it remains in the space. Thus making it possible for Antennas to be fixed in one location and reduces the cost as they don't require a tracking equipment for the satellite. But an object cannot remain stationary in the space and the reason Stationary satellite appears to be stationary at one point is because it has the same speed of revolution as earth and remains just above the equator. This means the satellite remains at exactly the same position with respect to earth thus appearing to be stationary.

At this point in time there are 300 Geo-stationary satellites orbiting in an orbit also known as Geo-synchronous orbit and with that Geo-Synchronous Satellite. Geo-Stationary satellites have revolutionized the communication industry from the time of their deployment and are regarded as the most important satellite in space.

To stay in orbit around the earth you need to be resisting the pull of gravity pulling you downwards. To do this you must be going at a certain speed determined by this height. This speed gets higher the closer you want to orbit and slower the further out you want to orbit. A stationary satellite is one that lies at the point out from the Earth where it's speed above the earth makes it orbit at the same rate that the earth spins (roughly twenty four hours). So that it never appears to move on the sky.

This has many applications where you need a stationary satellite at a known position (like in the GPS system).
