The history of the word "Wiki" is Hawaiian based which means quick. If we move towards the definition of the word then Wiki stands for a joint website whose content can be edited by anyone who has the access to that website. Wiki websites are designed keeping in mind the term "what I know" about any knowledge domain. Visitors are allowed to add, remove and edit the content. The linking of many different pages in Wiki's makes it easy to interact and effective tool for mass joint communication and discussion. However, Wiki's are criticized for their reliability as the information is added and updated by the people and chances of introduction of incorrect content are highly susceptible. Basically Wiki's are based on the assumption of goodness of people.

WikiWikiWeb was the first ever project developed in 1994 and launched in 1995. The most known Wiki is WikiPedia from where we find all the things. The name Wiki was given by Cunningham who was told by employee at Hawaii airport to take the WikiWiki bus line between the airport terminals whereas by WikiWiki he meant fast.

In early 2000s, wikis were increasingly used in enterprise environment for collaborative communication in projects. There is also use of wikis behind the firewalls in organizations intranet rather then in public internet.
