It means "eight legs".

Octopus is said to be a creature (type of fish) in the ocean which has 8 legs and can be poisonous as it produces a type of ink. This is why in maths the teachers often say, "an 'octagon has 8 sides like an 'octopus"

The word octopus means eight (I forget in which language, latin or roman, I think) for its eight tentacles

An octopus is a carnivorous mollusk that lives in the sea and has eight "arms" or tentacles.  The word comes from the Greek word "oktopous". Meaning "eight-footed.
