Meredith is a name conferred upon a girl and a boy. The name is borrowed from its Welsh origin "Maredudd or Meredydd", which means "great lord" and possibly "sea lord" too. Since the middle of the 20th century, the name Meredith was used more for girls than for boys. The name is still reserved for a boy in Wales. The English poet and novelist had George Meredith as a surname.

In the US, Meredith is used vastly as a girl's name, for instance the actress Meredith Baxter and newscaster Meredith Vieira. The name was ranked 367 in 1000 popular names of the US in the year 2005.
