Euphemism is a substitution of a less offensive expression in place of one which may offend or say something unpleasant to the listener. It is also termed as doublespeak.

It can also be a substitution of a description of something rather than a name. It is done or said to avoid revealing secret or sacred names to obscure the identity of a subject.

For example use of 'passed away' is an inoffensive term compared to 'died'.
