The name Ignatius is a name for a male derived from the roman family name Egnatius, which may in turn be a derivation of the Latin word 'ignis' that means fire.

Many early saints were named Ignatius, including the third bishop of Antioch.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch was born around 35 AD and died between 98 AD and 117 AD. He was the third bishop or alternatively called as the Patriarch of Antioch succeeding Saint Peter and Evodius.

Ignatius also called himself by the name Theophorus which meant 'bearer of God' is believed to have been a disciple of the Apostle John.

His feast day is commemorated by the Roman Catholics on the 17th of October every year, while it is celebrated by the Orthodox as well as the Eastern Catholic churches on the 20th of December.
