What Does Cross Cutting Wood Mean?

Cross cutting wood is cutting across the wood's grain as opposed to ripping, which is cutting with the grain.

Just to add to Greyhead's excellent answer, if you had a 2x6x10 feet, a cross cut would be cutting the 5 1/2 inch dimension while ripping would be a 10 foot long cut along the board's length.
