The expression pro forma is derived from the Latin phrase which means "as a matter of form". Its meaning usually depends of the context in which it is applied. Doing a particular thing in a pro forma method is to do it in an unthinking way to fulfil the least requirements or to match to a principle.

At times pro forma is also applied to a partly finished file, created by an individual to be fully finished and revisited by a number of others. Its main aim being to regulate the information revisited to the creator.

Generally a pro forma would include pointers guiding. A pro forma document is given in advance prior to any actual transactions. This type of document works in place of an actual document of the transaction.
