Mille feuille refers to a kind of pastry that is constituted of sheets of pastry, either filo or the puff variety, which are placed above each other, resembling a sandwich. It is then filled with layers of jam; mainly raspberry, whipped cream or cheese, and usually topped with powdered sugar, or fondant. It then usually decorated or garnished with a coat of fondant, with chocolate strings made into a design. It may even contain a filling of pastry cream.

The mille feuille, meaning a thousand leaves, is the French version of the Napoleon. It is usually eaten as a dessert, sometimes even in the form of a meal.

A savoury Italian variant is even filled with stuffing like spinach or pesto. In Australia it is called as the vanilla slice.
