I think its origins are Latin, and that it means a person who comes from the region around the Adriatic sea. However, some baby name websites give the name an alternative meaning of "dark".
I suppose both meanings make sense, actually - in that many people from the Mediterranean countries around the Adriatic have such gorgeous dark hair and eyes!
