According to politics and history, a colony is defined as a territory that is under the immediate political control of a state, which is geographically distant. The state that owns the colony is called the Metropolitan state. The citizens of the colony use the term Mother Country to refer to the metropolitan state. The terms that are preferred to be used today for referring to colonies are overseas territory or dependent territory.
Many a times, a body of people belonging to the metropolitan state choose to settle down in the colony, but maintain their ties with their homeland and continue to remain as nationals of that land. However, they are not directly under the system of government of the home state.
