As a noun co-ed refers to a female student who is studying in a co-educational institution, usually at the college or university level. It is the short form of co-educational student. As a noun it means attended by persons of both sexes. As an adjective co-ed could be of or concerning a co-ed; used by or open to men as well as women, as in 'a co-ed dorm' ; or of or concerning co-education.

It is synonymous with co-educational.

Prior to the 1960s, a number of private institutions offering higher education used to restrict their enrollment to only members of the same sex. In fact, the majority of institutions offering higher education—both public and private— as a rule restricted themselves to a single sex enrollment at some period in their history.
