Made popular in recent years by model Claudia Schiffer, this name is mentioned in the New Testament as belonging to an early Christian. It is a feminine form of Claudius; this is an old Latin family name which originally meant "lame." It became especially well known early in the first century AD, because of the Emperor Claudius.

The French version, Claude (which is also occasionally a girl's name in French) grew in popularity due to the fame of a 7th century saint. In English it is spelt Claud; the modern Italian version is Claudio. The boy's nameClaud is much less used nowadays; the girl's name Claudia is better known, especially in Germany where it is pronounced CLOUD-ia.

A rare variant is Claudette, which had a revival in the mid-20th century due largely to the fame of Hollywood actress Claudette Colbert, but is seldom heard now.
