Belladonna is a poisonous plant that grows in the wild. Its generic name is Atropa; a Greek word for one of the fates who hold the shears that can cut the thread of life. It is a deadly poison.

Belladonna has many medicinal uses. If applied locally, it deadens pain and irritability and was used to treat cases of neuralgia, gout, sciatica and rheumatism. If ingested it affects the brain and the bladder.

The juice of this plant was used by Italian ladies in the Middle Ages to dilate their pupils and give their eyes greater brilliancy.

Every part of the Belladonna plant is poisonous and should not be handled by anyone who has cuts and abrasions on his hands. The most poisonous part is the root.
