A very popular male first name Adam is pronounced AD-um. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "earth." In Hebrew, it is a generic term for "man." In the Bible, in the Genesis account, he was the first man created from the red earth of Eden. He was the husband of Eve.

The name was borne by a seventh-century Irish abbot of Fermo in Italy. Steadily used from the middle ages until the 1700s, and again beginning in the 1970s.

Famous personalities bearing the name include Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.; actor Adam Sandler; British Architect Adam, Robert.

Adam has many variant forms and includes Ad, Adamo, Adams, Adan, Adao, Addam, Addams, Addem, Addie, Addis, Addison, Addy, Ade, Adem and Adham.
