Freudian psychotherapy has evolved from the work of the famous Sigmund Freud who was born in 1856 and who died in 1939. Freud called his therapeutic work "psychoanalysis". The work of psychoanalytical therapists took off around 1910 and continues today. The therapy is intensive often based on several weekly sessions over long periods of time and focuses on exploring the unconscious workings of the mind. It is a 1:1 therapy in which the therapist spends most of the session time listening to clients. They will speak to offer interpretations of what the clients says s/he is thinking or feeling. These interoretations are based on the body of clinical and theoretical work started by Freud and since added to by others. The main strategy of Freduian analysis is to make the unconscious conscious so that clients better understand themselves. Freud believed he had developed a science of the human mind but this opinion continues to be widley criticised and rejected.
