I am an Estes and was always told it came from d' este which is a town in northern Italy.
Estes originated in Sicily as de Este. They were a powerful family and engaged in a conflict with another family. They kidnapped a member of the other family and most of the de Este family were killed in revenge. A couple of them escaped to Wales and they eventually went to England. I've traced my branch to England in the 1500s. My ancestors came to America in 1680 from Kent, England. I found the de Este origin in a book called "The Estes Family" in the Denver genealogy library.
It's Italian for La Este. They decided to change it to plural so it's now Estes.
The first name origin of Estes is Latin which means Estuary.
The last name origin of Estes is English. It is a variant name of Eastes. Matthew (1645–1723) and Richard (born 1647) Estes, sons of Robert and Dorothy Estes of Dover have bring this name to New England.
