The German names that start with Ing are usually first names such as Inge or Ingrid last names are different like Ingeldorf. The ancient God does not make a lot of sense either it is a far fetched theory. I think that if the origin is German then it is because the spelling was changed from Engel to Ingle and Engel in correct translation means Angel.
Looking at the pronunciation of Ingle and the correct German pronunciation of Engel it is exactly the same.

So it is really much more likely that the name comes from Engel and the spelling was Americanized over the years and Engel became Inle since Engel can be a last name I am afraid this makes more sense then complicated research in Genealogy. And if you research Names and how the where changed when the where being pronounced by an American you will find that this is most likely the way it happened if it is of German origin .

Not to say I am right but I did check with at least 12 other Germans here and abroad and the all agree.

My last name is Engle my ancestry is entirely German. My mother came from germany when she was 22, my fathers grandparent came from germany and at Ellis Island (I believe) Our family last name was changed from Ingel to Engle. For as long as I can remember we were told the meaning was "Angel" on our family coat of arms there is an angel in the left corner holding a swatch of fabric with "Ingel" on it. Hope this helps. There is a book about the last name Engle.

The English Ingle is in no way related to the German Ingle and there is a definate comparability between the English 'Ingle' and the celtic 'Inglis' diriven from the scots traders who traded with the English way back in xxxx century; inglis being a derogatory name given to those scots for trading with the english.

I remember many (too many) years ago I saw 'Inglis' scraped into Hardrian's wall (English side)and judging by the erosion, moss etc it had been done century's before - Jon. Ingle uk

I have found that the English/celtic name Ingle also is tied to Clan Douglas of Scotland.

My last name is Ingle (in the U.S.).   My grandfather told me that when his parents came from Germany around 1900 they shortened their name from Inglefinger to Ingle.   I don't see many Inglefinger's, but there are a few.   Makes me wonder if that is exactly correct?   Could it have been Engelfinger?   I haven't looked that up.
