The term "Solid South" refers to the electoral support of the Southern United States for the Democratic Party after the Civil War. The South withdrew its support of the Republican Party because of its policy of political rights for Blacks during Reconstruction. It lasted well into the twentieth century until the Democrats took a stance in support of civil rights.
