Hydatid is a word used as an adjective and refers to a kind of disease that can have affect on many animals; whether they are wild or in captivity. Sometimes the disease can affect humans also. The other name for hydatid disease is Echinococcus and it falls under the parasitic disease category. The disease is considered as a potentially fatal one and is caused due to the infestation by the larvae of the species called Echinococcus granulosus.

Sometimes the word hydatid can be used to refer to one part of the two closely related structures also and the structure is called the hydatid of Morgagni. In males the word can be used for the appendix testis and in females it conveys the idea of vesicular appendages of epophoron.
