Porosity in welding is a build up of gases in the molten weld puddle. These gases become trapped in the weld puddle as it cools. Porosity can be caused by dirt, slag, loss of shielding gas or weld contamination.

Porosity or void fraction is a measure of the void spaces in a material, and is a fraction of the volume of voids over the total volume, between 0–1, or as a percentage between 0–100%. The term is used in multiple fields including pharmaceutics, ceramics, metallurgy, materials, manufacturing, earth sciences and construction.

The word porosity is defined as the measurement of opening in buildings. These openings in buildings help air to enter the building during a period when the wind is blowing at a high speed. Porosity is also a term which is used to define those areas of the mould which absorb some of the material which is used to make the casting. They leave the object which has been cast (using the material which is used to make the casting) with a surface that has a rough and granular texture.

Porosity is a term that can also be used to define the ratio of the total volume of the voids which are available for the transmission of fluids to the total volume of a medium which is porous. It is also defined as the ratio of the volume of the voids of a mass of soil or rock, which can be drained by gravity, to the total volume of the mass.
