There are several meanings for the word modalities depending on the context in which it is used. Some of the contexts where this word is used are theology, music, medicine, psychotherapy semiotics etc. In theology this word is used in Christianity for the structure and organisation of the local church. The universal Catholic Church is the modality as per catholic theology.

In medicine and psychotherapy it refers to method of treatment as per the situation. This term is also found in linguistics and modal auxiliaries are examples of it. Thus it also has grammatical connotations. Modality in semiotics is a method of encoding information and determining the extent to which the signs, symbols and gestures are real or unreal.
