Mercurial has many different connotations. It is usually defined as relating to or associated with mercury like for instance 'That is a mercurial preparation'. It may alternatively be used in connotation with a person's temperament. In this context it means someone who suffers from drastic mood swings or erratic behaviour, for example, 'A Mercurial disposition is expected from the heroines of old'. It may also mean relating to the planet Mercury. Lastly it may mean something connected to or typical of the mythological god Mercury.

Mercurial is the name of software. It is written in Python and has a binary diff implementation that is written in C. Mercurial is basically a command line program. Interestingly all its commands start with hg which is the chemical symbol for the chemical Mercury.
