St Simeon Stylites basically was a Christian Saint born in northern Syria. He was referred to as stylite after the Greek term style meaning pillar. After starting his life as a shepherd boy, he got him self enrolled to a monastery before the age of 16. On one occasion, he started following a strict regime of fasting for Lent and was visited by the leader of the monastery who brought along some water and loaves. After a few days Simeon was found unconscious, with the water and loaves untouched. When he was taken to the monastery, it was found that he had tied his waist with a girdle which was made from palm fronds so forcefully that it took days to get rid of the fibres from the wound. After recovering Simeon was asked to leave the monastery.
