The term epiphysis is used to define the rounded end of a long bone. The pineal gland is one of the endocrine glands in the human body. This gland is also referred to as epiphysis (which is also known in scientific terminology as epiphysis cerebri). On the other hand, the term epiphysis is used to define the main section or the mid-section (which is also called the shaft) of a long bone.

The term metaphysis is used to define the body of cartilage which separates the epiphyses and the diaphysis of every long bone in the human body during the process of growth. This part of the bone is the part that grows during the childhood of a person and ossifies near the diaphysis and the epiphyses. The metaphysis stops growing completely when the person is between the ages of 18 years and 25 years and it ossifies completely into solid bone.

The DIAPHYSIS is the mid-section (shaft) of the bone. The EPIPHYSIS is the proximal and distal ends of the bone.
