Horizontal means "pertaining to the horizon." The horizontal line is always at right angles to the vertical line. It is always parallel to "a horizon." A horizontal move in corporate level means a lateral growth in the company. For example, a person who is on an executive level can grow vertically to be a team leader. However, there may be a choice for him to grow in a horizontal manner or laterally too. In other words, he is said to have grown in the corporate organization horizontally or laterally, if he attains a respected position in Human Resources, a divergence from the vertical growth ladder like an executive-team leader-team manager etc.

The word horizontal is the adjective form of the noun "horizon." Anything perpendicular to the "vertical" is called horizontal. Anything arranged in rows can also be termed as horizontal. Words like flat, prone, prostrate, and recumbent are the synonyms of the word "horizontal."
