Soto is also a name of Spanish origin. Some of the variations of the surname are Sotela, Sotelo, de Sotelo, Sotera, Sotero, Desoto etc. Though the date is not reported, it is believed that the surname was found to be used in Castile, north central Spain.

Among the early explorers of the New World, one can fondly recall the name of Herando de Soto who travelled to Central America with a friend Pedrarias Dávila in 1514. He is credited with having explored the present day Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras in the 1520s. He also toured to Peru and finally returned to Spain in the year 1535. People who bear the surname Soto are known to be fiercely adventurous.

I guess Mr. Hernando de Soto was spreading his seed all over tha place. I'm from Nicaraguan origin and bear the last name Soto from my father's sid of the family. I always wondered how the hell we ended up with such last name since it's very rare...even in nicaragua...i personally don't know any other family or person (besides my siblings of course) who have the last name. I wish i could find out exactly how it came to be in our family.

Well, many Soto and De Soto converted from Judaism by 1500. From the little I know it's a Sepharfic name.
