Sadat is an Egyptian name which means master or gentleman. It is a common Egyptian surname.

The most famous Egyptian with the name Sadat is of course, Anwar Sadat. His full name is actually Mohammed Anwar Al Sadat. He was the third Egyptian President as well as a prominent soldier and politician. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential and important Middle Eastern leaders in recent history.

During the reign of his predecessor Sadat served as Minister of State. Later in 1959 he was appointed Secretary to the National Union. For four years between 1960 and 1968 he was president of the Parliament and then later he was appointed Vice President in 1964. He was loyal to Nasser which is how he managed to survive those turbulent times. He was elected President because most of the people perceived him as being a mere puppet and therefore easily manipulated. He soon proved that he did indeed have a mind of his own and he was assassinated on the 6th of Oct, 1981.
