There are two theories that are put forth by scholars for the meaning of the word 'Maitland'. One of the theories says that the word conveys the idea of being 'inhospitable' and can trace its origin in the Old French language. Another theory says that the word is of old English origin and the meaning that you can figure out from the word 'meadows' or the 'Matthew's land'.

The word is seldom being used as a first name but as a surname it is very popular and you can find several people that are the bearers of the surname. The word is considered as the Masculine one so if sometimes if you find the word being used as a first name it is used for a man only not for a woman.

Are you sure Maitland does not mean "Man who speaks through lies & deceit?" Or perhaps "Man who dis-respects, uses & abuses?"
