Staffing usually refers to the process of recruiting, hiring, orientating, retaining and firing employees. Staffing is predominately a Human Resources (HR) term. A lot of companies have human resources staff to take care of contracts, grievances and work related policies that are always stipulated in employees' contracts.

A staffing company deals with the background checks and testing of employees, taking a commission of the wages earned by workers they send to outside companies. Sometimes the staffing company can obtain something that is called a ‘finder's fee’ from the company that hires an employee on a full time basis.

An HR person who is responsible not only for his or her staff but also for staffing needs to evaluate the needs of the company as a whole, as well as particular departments. There are also other aspects to consider with this feature, including understaffing and overstaffing which can hurt a company at critical moments.

The main objective is always to find a balance, where the productivity of a department is not hampered when one person calls in sick or is off for a significant amount of time.

When staffing a company, a lot goes into the recruitment process which is a time consuming and rigorous process which begins with an advertisement for the role.
