The name Ephraim is mentioned in the Bible, it is also a name for a Jewish male. It is derived from the Hebrew word 'Ephrayim' which means 'fruitful'.

In the Old Testament, Ephraim is the name of the second son of Joseph and the forefather of one of the tribes of Israel. He was born in Egypt, and was first mentioned in the Bible as being presented with his brother Manasseh, before their grandfather Jacob, in order to be blessed by him. Instead of placing his right hand on the elder of the two brothers, he consciously placed it on Manasseh and therefore Ephraim was rendered younger than his brother. Ephraim's family was in its third generation even before Joseph died. The successors of Ephraim were called as the Tribe of Ephraim.
