Rachel is a Hebrew name, which roughly translated in English means, "gentle as a lamb." What Vicky said above is true about Rachel being the wife of Jacob in the Old Testament, and she was quite befitting of the name. :)

I have it on good authority that it is indeed Hebrew by original derivation, but do you no anything about Hewber or Huber derivation? :)

The word 'ewe' when you are using as the meaning of the name Rachel conveys the idea of the mother of Joseph and Benjamin. She was also the favourite wife of Jacob and you can find the description about her when you are going through the Old Testament.

But when you are using the word 'ewe' in the context of modern English you are using it as a noun and the meaning that a person can figure put from the use of the word is a female sheep. But when you want to describe the same kind of sheep in the male form you should use the word ram. But the word 'ram' has several other uses also and you can use the word to describe a part of a machine that is used to hit something that is very hard.

So when hollywood sings rain man,  in their lyric's  which sounds more like 'rayma' which mean ewe in hebrew, do they mean "gentle as a lamb" as a taunt? Because we are letting the world be corrupt. :)!
